A Hand-ful of Lavender Goodness



This September has been very different for me. I have just started college and everything is completely new.  I have a new routine, getting up earlier than usual in the morning for the bus is one of the tricky parts.  I am certainly appreciating more all the times my parents drove me to school!!!

Autumn and winter with its wind and cold I feel can be drying to our skin, particularly our hands. Plus I’m now carrying all those new college books, so I feel we need something to treat our delicate little mitts!! I feel my hands need a bit of TLC at the moment so I made my own hand scrub and learned to do a hand massage from a book that I bought recently. The book is called ‘Girls’ Night in’ by Hannah Read-Baldrey and contains loads of crafts, cakes, and cocktail recipes for the ultimate girl pampering.


Lavender Hand Scrub

You will need

  • 200g Epsom salts or coarse sea salt
  • 100ml olive or almond oil
  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 2-3tbsp Vitamin E oil (optional)
  • 1-2 tbsp dried lavender flowers (optional)
  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Work a handful of the scrub into your hands and rinse with warm water.

“Before a manicure or after a crafting session there’s nothing like a good exfoliation. The salt purifies, while the oil ensures the skin doesn’t dry out. Store the extra in a sterilised airtight container, for example an old jam jar. “

How to give a Hand Massage

  1. Place a towel on your lap. Working with one hand at a time, rub with hand moisturiser or massage oil. Gently massage all the way up to the elbow until the moisturiser has been completely blended into the skin.
  2. Work up from the muscles in the wrists to the elbow using gentle rotating, squeezing motion. If you are massaging someone else, use both hands to squeeze either side of the arm, working your way up to the elbow. Repeat this action back down.
  3. Turn the hand over and firmly massage the palm and the spaces in between the fingers. Turn the hand over and repeat. Massage each finger individually from top to bottom, then give a gentle twist in both directions and a quick pull to finish.
  4. Slide your hands downwards from the elbow to the fingers, then repeat the process with the other hand.
